6 May Festivals to Start Your Summer

We’re aware that summer doesn’t officially kick off until June, but the itch for outdoor thrifting, pretending to “know” wine, and craft beer with the crew approaches.

May takes the lead in the annual 4-month festival relay, or as we like to think, Chicago’s favorite stretch.

Beer Under Glass
If your love for plants and craft beer often leave your apartment well decorated but your pockets empty, a ticket to this epic event on May 18 at Garfield Park Conservatory includes samples from all brewers showcasing their best libations and delightful bites from local food trucks. Decide which breweries to spend your summer at while browsing an inviting collection of greenery.

Chicago Zine Fest
First of all, what’s a zine? Chicago Zine Fest (CZF) defines this abbreviation of “fanzine or magazine” as “a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images”. Cool, right? Independently and imaginatively constructed/printed work shows off from May 18-19 in addition to special events, free workshops, and unlimited celebrating. Sound like your ideal Saturday and/or Sunday? More details to come.

Lincoln Park Wine Festival
Calling all those who are “one with wine” or desperately need to vacate a social slump. Jonquil Park presents over 80 varietals from the U.S. and abroad plus fest-worthy art, music, and food. Taste products of the vine with a congregation of like-minded urbanites May 26-27.

Randolph Street Market Festival
Also on the 26-27, a flea market to treat closet unrest, bare rooms, and general boredness. Bring a willing partner for all day meandering at 1341 W Randolph St. There are plenty of cool things to eat, people to watch, and fares that might be just what you’re missing.

Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival
What’s better than a medley of Chicago tribute bands, karaoke, and deejays? All that with a side of street food and artisan goods. Gather in Lakeview from Saturday, May 26 to Sunday, May 27 for an entertainment showdown. Clearly, that’s a popular weekend for festivals, but who says you can’t make the rounds?

Mayfest/Maifest
If you slept through Oktoberfest this year, we offer you another opportunity to participate in pretzel eating, “gemütlichkeit” (German for geniality), and other aspects of Western European culture. Fetch your clogs, and visit Lincoln Square (4700 N Lincoln Ave) from May 31 through June 3.
